Specter Cabinet FAQ
Here's a list of useful questions about the Specter Cabinet:
How long will it take to put this together?
It took me a total of 2 hours once I had all the materials.
How hard is it to make?
You basically have to just know how to measure and cut things with a hacksaw. It's very easy to put together.
How expensive is it to put together?
I spent $60 on all the materials to build the one in the plans. I spent a lot more than that trying to figure out which $60 worth of materials to useÉ
Can anyone make the Specter Cabinet?
I'm confident that an intelligent 12 year-old, or your average 40 year-old magician, is capable of building Specter Cabinet.
Can I perform it surrounded?
No.
Who thinks up the questions for this FAQ?
I get a monkey drunk, and then give him a typewriter.
Can I pet the monkey?
No. He bites.
Can I make the frame out of something other than PVC?
Use any material you want. I used PVC because it's inexpensive, light-weignt and easy to work with.
You may have to order the kind I use off the Internet if you don't have a store that sells furniture grade PVC near you. Try a Google search for "PVC" and "furniture" and "parts".
Are they in Purgatory?
Of course not. That'd make the whole show stupid. After the first season it was obvious that it's a real place. After the second season we know the outside world exists.
How did you think of the Specter Cabinet?
I watched a video of my shadow box and realized I could get the same effect without the trick base. I then sat down and tried to figure out the simplest tools and materials to build it with.
I then lamented all the money I wasted on my original version.
Do you have any ideas for how I can perform this effect?
I suggest really atmospheric music. Watch some horror movies for ideas. Just find a way to make it suit your personality.
What are the performance requirements?
You need to have control over the lighting where you are performing. You don't need a black backdrop like a traditional black art illusion, but you need to be able to lower the lights some.
